Who issues the permit

Onsite septic systems in New Mexico are permitted by the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED). The permit approves the system type, size and location for your lot.

What goes into the application

  • Site evaluation results
  • A site plan showing the house, well, tank, field and setbacks
  • The system design and sizing
  • Property information

Inspection

The installed system is inspected before it's covered, so the inspector can see the tank, connections and field. Once it passes, it's backfilled and graded.

Timelines

Permit review times vary. We'll tell you what to expect for your project and keep it moving.
