Common causes
- Solids carried over from a tank that wasn't pumped
- Too much water — leaks, heavy laundry days, added bedrooms
- Crushed pipe from vehicles driving over the field
- Roots from trees and shrubs planted too close
- Age — the soil simply clogs over decades
Diagnosis first
- Check the tank level and condition
- Check the outlet, filter and distribution box
- Look at the field for wet spots and odors
- Find broken or blocked lines if needed

Repair or replace
A blocked line, a tipped distribution box or a clogged filter can be fixed. A field that's saturated across the board usually needs replacing — and replacement requires a permit.

Septic questions
Can a failing field recover?
Sometimes, if the cause is fixed and water use drops — but a fully saturated field usually needs replacement.
Do additives fix a field?
Additives don't fix a failed field.
Is a new field in a different spot?
Often, in the reserve area or wherever the permit allows.
