Do

  • Spread laundry over the week
  • Fix running toilets and leaky faucets quickly
  • Pump the tank on a regular schedule
  • Clean the effluent filter
  • Keep a sketch of where the tank and field are

Don't

  • Flush wipes (even "flushable"), paper towels, feminine products or grease
  • Pour paint, solvents or large amounts of harsh chemicals down drains
  • Drive or park on the field
  • Plant trees or shrubs near the field
  • Build patios, sheds or pools over any part of the system

Water from the roof

Direct gutters, canales and runoff away from the drain field. Extra water can overload it.

Records

Keep your permit, design and pumping receipts together. They're useful for maintenance and when you sell.

Septic questions

Can I use a garbage disposal?

It adds solids; use it sparingly and pump more often.

Are water softeners OK?

Ask your installer; some designs route softener discharge differently.

How do I find my tank later?

Risers at ground level make it easy.
