Effluent Filters

A simple filter at the tank outlet keeps solids from washing into the drain field — the most expensive part of the system.

What it does

An effluent filter sits in the outlet of the septic tank. Liquid passes through it on the way to the drain field; small solids that would otherwise clog the field are caught.

Why it's worth it

  • Extends the life of the drain field
  • Catches problems early — a clogged filter shows the tank needs attention
  • Inexpensive compared to field replacement

Maintenance

The filter needs to be pulled and rinsed periodically, often when the tank is pumped. With a riser over the outlet, it's easy to reach.

Septic questions

Does every tank have a filter?

Many newer tanks do; older tanks often don't. One can usually be added.

How often should it be cleaned?

Often at each pumping, or more if it's clogging.

Can a clogged filter cause backups?

Yes — slow drains can be a sign the filter needs cleaning.
