When they're needed
New Mexico's rules may call for advanced treatment when a standard system can't adequately protect groundwater — for example, on smaller lots, where rock or groundwater is shallow, or where soils don't treat well. The site evaluation and permit review decide what's required.
How they work
After the septic tank, an advanced unit adds oxygen and helpful bacteria (or uses media filters) to break down more of the waste. The cleaner effluent then goes to a disposal field, which can often be smaller.

What to know before you choose
- Electricity — most units have pumps or blowers.
- Maintenance — they need regular service, often under a maintenance contract.
- Alarms — a panel alerts you if something stops working.
- Cost — more than a conventional system up front.
